Event Rules

Olympic wrestling consists of two events, each with its own rules. In Greco-Roman wrestling, athletes can only use their arms and upper body to attack their opponents above the waist. Freestyle wrestling is more open, and athletes can also attack with their legs, and the attack position is not limited to above the waist.

However, the two wrestling styles have the same goal. Wrestling matches are held on a circular mat, and a match is divided into two rounds, each lasting three minutes. Wrestlers must press the opponent's shoulders to the mat with their bare hands, which is called "shoulder landing". If the "shoulder landing" is not achieved during the match, the player who puts the opponent at a disadvantage more times in the regular time and scores more points wins the match.

Olympic History

Greco-Roman wrestling has been an Olympic "blue ribbon event" (the most watched and prestigious event in the Olympics) since the first modern Olympic Games, the 1896 Athens Olympics. From the 1908 Olympics, Greco-Roman wrestling became a permanent Olympic event. Freestyle wrestling made its debut on the Olympic stage at the 1904 St. Louis Olympics and has been featured since the 1920 Austrian Olympics. Women's freestyle wrestling was included in the 2004 Athens Olympics.
